Severe weather alert for Friday, September 11th: thunderstorms in the South, hydrogeological risk in the Center-North.

Friday, September 11, 2026, bad weather continues to hit Italy with a new phase of instability affecting the South. The Civil Protection has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorm risk in Campania, Molise, and Abruzzo, with particular attention to the high Irpinia area, Sannio, and the Upper Sangro Basin.

In Central-Northern Italy, hydrogeological criticalities persist after the heavy rains of recent days. Friuli Venezia Giulia remains under an orange alert, especially in the Lower Friuli and Trieste areas, where intense rainfall and thunderstorms are possible. A yellow alert for hydraulic and hydrogeological risk is also active in Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Marche, Umbria, and Veneto.

The most intense rainfall on Friday will affect the high Campania region before extending towards Basilicata and high Puglia, with the possibility of strong thunderstorms. In the Northeast, where the bad weather has been most persistent, a gradual improvement is expected throughout the day.

The severe weather affecting Italy is caused by the passage of an Atlantic disturbance, a trough bringing unstable air and precipitation. This weather system began impacting the country in the preceding days, already causing very intense rainfall and violent thunderstorms, especially in the Central-North, leading to saturated soil and swollen rivers.

The risk of hydrogeological (landslides, flash floods) and hydraulic (river flooding) hazards arises precisely from the accumulation of these successive rainfall events, which have rendered the ground incapable of absorbing more water. Friuli Venezia Giulia, in particular, was among the regions most affected in the initial phases of the disturbance, which is why it maintains the highest alert level (orange).

The change on Friday consists of the shift of the most unstable core towards the South, bringing a new wave of severe weather to regions that had been less affected so far. The Civil Protection alerts, divided into yellow (ordinary criticality) and orange, serve precisely to signal these at-risk areas where intense phenomena can cause damage and danger to the population.
