Severe weather alert for central-northern regions, residual disturbances improving

Despite a general improvement in weather conditions, the Civil Protection Agency has maintained a yellow alert for thunderstorms and hydrogeological risk for today, Sunday, September 14, in some regions of central and northern Italy. The alert affects specific areas of Veneto and Umbria.

The vigilance bulletin indicates the possibility of isolated to scattered precipitation, including showers or thunderstorms, across various zones including Triveneto, eastern Liguria, central-northern Tuscany, Romagna, Umbria, Marche, eastern Lazio, and some coastal areas of Abruzzo, Molise, and northern Apulia. Cumulative amounts are generally expected to be weak, with locally moderate levels in Friuli Venezia Giulia, eastern Liguria, northern Tuscany, Romagna, and northern Marche.

The current weather situation is the result of the interaction between two large atmospheric systems. On one hand, a high-pressure area is settling over the Mediterranean basin, particularly over central and southern Italy, bringing more stable conditions. On the other hand, a flow of humid and disturbed air, moving mainly over central-northern Europe, still manages to partially affect the northern Mediterranean, causing the last deteriorations in northern Italy.

This transitional phase follows a period of more pronounced instability. The main disturbed impulse, responsible for the most intense phenomena in recent hours and days, is now moving away eastward. The improvement is already underway and should consolidate during the course of Sunday, with generally dry weather over much of the country in the afternoon, albeit with possible mid-to-high-level cloud formations. A clear and starry night is forecast, marking the return to more stable and typically autumnal atmospheric conditions.
