Piantedosi extends border controls with Spain until October

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has ordered a 15-day extension of border controls at air and maritime borders with Spain, setting the new expiration date for October 8, 2026. The decision, communicated on September 15, aims to counter the risk of terrorist infiltration and manage the heightened internal security profiles resulting from the wave of arrivals in Ceuta, where approximately 70,000 individuals were recorded on July 30.

The measure modifies the previously established schedule, which envisioned the conclusion of checks by September 23. Italy, lacking direct land borders with Spain, has limited the control action solely to ports and airports, temporarily suspending the ordinary regime of free movement provided for the Schengen area on the affected routes. The Madrid government has adopted a parallel line, deciding to extend its own checks until the same date.

The reaction from the Spanish government was immediate and harsh, with Foreign Minister Fabio Albares describing the Italian choice as "absurd and a disgrace." According to Albares, such an initiative damages the philosophy of European partnership and undermines the spirit of cooperation. In Italy, the government's position is firmly supported by figures such as Fabio Rampelli, Deputy Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, who defends the extension as an indispensable tool for the defense of national borders.

The current situation originated on July 30, 2026, when the Spanish city of Ceuta, an enclave in North Africa, recorded an estimated influx of about 70,000 people. This massive event triggered a series of extraordinary border control measures by several European countries, concerned about potential terrorist infiltrations and the management of migration flows.
