MIM activates free supplementary insurance for over 1.2 million school workers. Confirmation required by September 20 via the portal.
The Ministry of Education and Merit has launched a new free supplementary health insurance service for school staff starting September 10, 2026. The measure involves over 1.2 million beneficiaries, including teachers, administrative staff, school principals, and ministry employees.
Enrollment is not automatic: each worker must voluntarily confirm their participation through the official MIM portal, using SPID, CIE, or CNS credentials. The deadline to make a choice is set for September 20, 2026. After this date, it will no longer be possible to join the service.
Management is entrusted to the company UniSalute, co-insured with Poste Assicura and Intesa Sanpaolo Protezione. Once enrollment is confirmed, approximately 20 technical days are required for the activation of coverage, which will last for 48 months for permanent staff.
The supplementary health insurance for school staff originates from a regulatory process initiated in 2025. The first step was Legislative Decree No. 25 of March 14, 2025, which introduced the principle of health coverage for school workers. This measure was then supplemented by Legislative Decree No. 38 of March 27, 2026, which defined the operational details of the service.
The process was completed with Article 4 of the National Collective Bargaining Agreement for the Education and Research Sector, signed on December 29, 2025, which established the terms of the insurance coverage. The government's stated objective is to improve the organizational well-being and health protection of school workers through a centralized welfare system.
This measure represents a significant change from the past, as it offers, for the first time, a free and structured supplementary health protection at the national level. However, it presents some limitations: workers from the Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano and the Aosta Valley, substitute teachers with short-term contracts, and workers who turn 71 during the current year are excluded.
