Massive Ukrainian drone attack hits over 20 Russian regions.

A massive wave of drones struck Russia on the night of September 17, affecting over twenty regions of the country. The attack, described by Russian authorities as extremely extensive, caused significant damage in several locations.

In Rostov-on-Don, a series of explosions triggered a large fire in the area of the Rostov-on-Don-Central military airport, with power outages in several city districts. Approximately a thousand kilometers away, in Yaroslavl, a drone attack caused a massive fire at the Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery. Local authorities confirmed the damage but stated there were no reported casualties.

The Russian Defense Ministry stated that air defenses intercepted and destroyed 641 drones overnight, with activity also recorded over the Black, Azov, and Caspian Seas. Russian civil aviation temporarily restricted operations at several airports, including Sochi and Gelendzhik, due to the threat.

The nighttime attack on September 17th represents a further escalation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which erupted with the Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory in February 2022. Initially a conventional war, the conflict has progressively transformed to include long-range attacks on civilian and infrastructure targets in both countries.

In recent years, Ukraine has developed and intensified the use of attack drones to strike strategic targets within Russian territory, seeking to reduce the adversary's military advantage. These attacks often target energy infrastructure, such as refineries, and military bases, with the aim of degrading Russia's logistical and production capabilities.

The targeted Yaroslavl refinery is a strategic facility for fuel production, while the Rostov military airport is a crucial base for Russian operations in the region. These long-distance attacks, which follow a Russian raid on Kyiv on the same night, highlight how the conflict has now extended far beyond the front lines, directly involving the national territories of both contenders with increasing risks of escalation.
