Russia strikes strategic infrastructure in Ukraine with massive attack.

Russian forces launched a massive attack overnight on several regions of Ukraine, striking strategic infrastructure. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the offensive used precision weapons from land, sea, and air, as well as drones, against targets in the Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa regions.

The targets include metallurgical plants, defense industry sites, and energy and transportation infrastructure. Specifically, the Zaporizhstal steel plant, a complex producing electronic intelligence systems, and the port of Chornomorsk were hit, where merchant ships carrying military materials were attacked. In Kyiv, local media report at least 18 injured, including two children, with damage recorded in over ten locations in the capital.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine erupted in February 2022 with the large-scale invasion by Russian troops. The origins of the crisis date back to 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and supported pro-Russian separatists in the Donbas region, in response to the Ukrainian revolution that distanced the country from Moscow's influence and brought it closer to the West.

The war rapidly transformed into a war of attrition, with Russia gaining control of vast areas in the south and east of Ukraine. Over the years, military operations have focused on striking Ukrainian economic and industrial infrastructure to weaken its capacity for resistance. Attacks on Black Sea ports, such as Odesa and Chornomorsk, aim to block Ukrainian grain exports and the arrival of Western military aid by sea.

The escalation of attacks on energy and industrial infrastructure, like the Zaporizhstal steel plant, is part of a strategy to paralyze Ukraine's war economy. These facilities provide crucial materials for military production, not only for Ukraine but also for its European allies. The situation remains at a stalemate, with both sides launching periodic offensives without decisive breakthroughs on the battlefield.
