International child pornography network dismantled in Italy

The Italian Postal Police have dismantled a vast international organization dedicated to child pornography, arresting 17 people and seizing approximately 34,000 images and 20,000 illicit videos. The investigation, coordinated by the Rome District Anti-Mafia Directorate, revealed that the five main administrators of the Telegram group are between 22 and 28 years old: four are Italian and one was stopped in Switzerland.

The organization, described as "a multinational of child pornography," operated with a structure comparable to a start-up, offering monthly subscriptions from 3 to 9 dollars. To remain in the group, users had to make donations or share child pornography material. In total, 1,025 users spread across 99 countries were identified, including 29 in Italy, 229 in the United States, and 136 in Russia.

Prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi called the operation a blow to "a horrendous criminal phenomenon," emphasizing how the organization's leaders profited from the suffering of children. The Postal Police infiltrated the social groups for a year before carrying out the arrests, which involved people in Lombardy, Veneto, Sardinia, Puglia, and Campania.

Online child pornography represents one of the most serious forms of cybercrime, exploiting communication technologies to disseminate illegal material on a global scale. This phenomenon has grown alongside the development of encrypted messaging platforms like Telegram, which offer users greater anonymity. Criminal organizations have adapted modern business models, similar to those of startups, to monetize the exploitation of minors.

Investigations into these networks are complex and require months of digital infiltration, as groups often reconstitute themselves after being shut down by platforms. Italy's Postal Police have developed specialized expertise to combat these crimes, collaborating with international authorities due to the transnational nature of the phenomenon. Anti-mafia prosecutors become involved when organizations exhibit hierarchical structures and systematic methods comparable to those of organized crime.

The young age of the arrested administrators is a concerning fact, indicating how cybercrime is recruiting a new generation of digital offenders. The victims of these crimes are often very young children, as in the case of seized images depicting minors as young as 4 years old, which makes repressive action and the subsequent identification and support of victims particularly urgent.
