The viral video shows a humanoid knocking down an influencer, but the reality is more complex: a remote-controlled robot and careful direction of the footage.
A video showing the so-called first fight between a human and a robot is going viral worldwide. In the footage, the humanoid EngineAI T800, modified to resemble the Terminator, appears to overpower American influencer and stunt performer Frankie LaPenna, repeatedly knocking him to the ground with powerful kicks.
However, the event organizers, San Francisco-based Robot Entertainment Kombat (REK), have revealed a surprise ending: according to them, LaPenna ultimately defeated the robot. Additionally, the fight was not between a man and an autonomous artificial intelligence, but between LaPenna and a humanoid robot remotely controlled by a human pilot using virtual reality systems.
The release of the video was carefully managed: the audience was not allowed to record, enabling REK to be the first to publish selected clips. The company initially only released the part where the robot dominates, promising "more material to come," fueling virality and interpretations of an epic human-machine showdown.
The event was organized by Robot Entertainment Kombat (REK), a San Francisco-based league that promotes full-contact fights between humanoid robots controlled by human pilots. Its slogan is "Real pilots, real punches." REK markets events, private fights, and even a simulator to qualify as robot pilots.
The choice of protagonists is not accidental. On one side is Frankie LaPenna, a viral video specialist and stunt performer, thus skilled at creating spectacular content. On the other side is the EngineAI T800, a Chinese humanoid robot approximately 1.73 meters tall and weighing 75-85 kg, aesthetically modified with a skeletal head and red eyes to evoke the cinematic Terminator. The robot does not act autonomously but is remotely controlled.
The communication strategy followed a precise script: total control over images (prohibiting external recordings), release of a partial and dramatic clip, and a promise of further content. This generated a wave of sensationalist headlines about "the first human-robot fight," demonstrating how marketing skill can precede and shape the perception of a technological event, regardless of its actual innovative scope.
