Tensions between the United States and Iran have been a constant for decades, but saw a sharp spike in 2018 when the Trump administration unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), which had limited Iran's atomic program in exchange for the removal of sanctions. Since then, Washington has imposed severe economic sanctions on Tehran, labeling it "the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism." Iran, in turn, has gradually breached the deal's limits, enriching uranium to higher levels.
The situation has deteriorated into a series of military incidents in the Persian Gulf region, including attacks on oil tankers, the downing of an American drone, and the U.S. killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in 2020. The Islamic Republic maintains it only seeks to develop peaceful nuclear energy, but Western and Israeli intelligence agencies fear a pursuit of an atomic weapon. The naval arm of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) recently reported ships being hit by mines near the Strait of Hormuz, warning that further U.S. provocations could trigger a broader response.
