Colony

Presented in the Midnight Screenings section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, "Colony" marks the return of South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho, already famous for "Train to Busan," to the zombie genre. The film, starring Gianna Jun and Koo Kyo-hwan, sets the usual survival plot in a quarantined Seoul skyscraper, where a virus turns people into a colony of infected with a collective intelligence. While the movie is praised for its visual strength, fast pace, and solid action sequences, reviews criticize its lack of originality, flat characterizations, and a screenplay that, despite interesting ideas about collective consciousness, recycles elements already seen in the genre without adding anything truly new.

The result is a mainstream Korean product, pleasantly entertaining for fans, but one that feels like a wasted opportunity to innovate.
