Valve has officially launched Steam Frame, its VR headset for the Steam platform. The highly anticipated hardware is now available for purchase, bringing innovative features to virtual reality gaming.
The device stands out for its versatility: it supports both wireless connection to a PC for gameplay and standalone execution of VR games directly on the headset itself. Additionally, a special function allows projecting a giant display in VR space to play even non-VR titles purchased on Steam.
Steam Frame uses pancake lenses for better image quality, overcoming the issues of Fresnel lenses. It is equipped with LCD displays with a resolution of 2160x2160 pixels per eye and a variable refresh rate between 72 and 144Hz. It includes a 6GHz wireless adapter and supports 'foveated streaming,' which tracks the gaze to optimize graphical performance.
Purchasing the headset also includes a copy of the VR game 'Half-Life: Alyx.' In Japan, prices start from 199,980 yen for the 256GB model, while in some regions, it is possible to enter a lottery for the first round of sales until September 17, 2026.
