The highly anticipated anime adaptation of *Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice*, titled *Sekiro: No Defeat*, premiered in Japanese theaters as a two-hour film. Unfortunately, this first incarnation proves to be a fragmentary disappointment that fails to capture the soul of FromSoftware's masterpiece.
The film, which tells the story of the one-armed warrior Wolf and the young immortal-blooded Kuro, prioritizes moments of reflection on the cost of immortality, but does so at the expense of narrative cohesion. The action sequences, while technically impressive, are too brief and lack impact, while the plot proves difficult to follow for those unfamiliar with the game.
Compressing a much longer story into two hours has created evident cracks. The moments dedicated to the protagonists feel like disjointed vignettes, crucial explanations are missing, and the enemies lack the depth present in the original. The result is a work that seems to be missing half of its story.
However, there is still hope for fans. The version currently released is only the theatrical cut. Later, Crunchyroll will release a limited series, a format that could give the narrative the necessary breathing room to fill the gaps and finally deliver an adaptation worthy of the original.
