Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave has landed on Nintendo Switch 2 with some of the highest review scores in franchise history. Four days after its global launch on September 17, 2026, the game settled at an 89 on Metacritic, tying Fire Emblem: Three Houses as the second-highest-rated mainline title, behind only Fire Emblem Awakening. On OpenCritic it maintains a similar average, with 97% of critics recommending it.
The RPG strategy game, co-developed by Intelligent Systems and Nintendo, has been praised for its ambitious structure with four playable protagonists whose paths ultimately converge. Outlets like IGN awarded a perfect 10/10, while Eurogamer, VGC, and The Gamer gave top scores.
However, the conversation in the community quickly shifted from critical acclaim to a specific point of contention: how the game distributes units and equipment once players reach the third act. On forums, fans are heatedly debating the recruitment system that asks players to fish for previously used characters from a shared pool, a mechanic some have compared to the gacha system from the mobile spin-off Fire Emblem Heroes.
Nintendo released a post-launch patch introducing 'Chosen' weapons inspired by Fire Emblem Heroes, a purely cosmetic homage. The distinction between this reference and the actual recruitment system, however, seems to have been lost in some discussions. Whether this debate subsides or becomes a sticking point for fans will likely influence how the eighteenth mainline chapter is remembered.
