The Swedish Academy has awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature to Canadian poet Anne Carson. The citation recognizes her "bold and inventive work that, in a playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature."
Anne Carson is known for a body of work that blends verse, prose, dialogue, and translation into a mix that defies genres. Her work ranges from opera librettos to literary criticism, and to verse novels like 1998's 'Autobiography of Red.'
The Academy highlighted how 'Autobiography of Red,' often considered her most important work, demonstrates Carson's ability to "modernize the classical literary tradition." The poet has also engaged with more modern inspirations, as in the book 'The Albertine Workout,' which reflects on the character Albertine from Marcel Proust's work.
