Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter is the most ambitious work by Yoshihiro Togashi, already well known for Yu Yu Hakusho, and it starts from a simple premise, a boy sitting an exam to become a Hunter so he can find his father, before gradually turning into something far more layered. The Nen power system, introduced with near-scientific logic and tightly consistent internal rules, raised the bar for the entire shonen genre and went on to inspire many later authors building similarly elaborate power systems of their own. But the series' real distinguishing trait is its willingness to venture into dark, morally ambiguous territory, culminating in the Chimera Ant arc, where Togashi interrogates the very concepts of heroism and empathy with a bluntness rarely seen in a magazine aimed at young readers.

The four leads, Gon, Killua, Kurapika and Leorio, remain sharply distinct in motivation and moral trajectory, avoiding the flatness that affects many ensemble casts in the same genre. The Yorknew City arc, built around Kurapika's methodical hunt for the Phantom Troupe, remains a fan favorite for showing how Togashi's rule-bound power system can generate genuine tactical suspense rather than simple strength escalation. Visually, Togashi's linework has always been distinctive and experimental, but his health issues have forced extremely long hiatuses, often lasting years, making serialization as irregular as its quality has remained high.

The two anime adaptations, the 1999 version and especially the one produced by Madhouse in 2011, cemented the manga's status as a classic even among people who never read it on the page. Despite an ending that still feels distant and uncertain, its audience has never stopped following it, as shown by the title's return in early July 2026, when the new volume sold over 538,000 copies, landing at number two on Japan's weekly chart right behind One Piece.
