Crimson Desert is the most ambitious project Pearl Abyss has ever attempted, a South Korean studio best known for the MMO Black Desert Online, arriving after an extraordinarily long development cycle that began with announcements quite different from what the game ultimately became at launch. At the heart of the experience is a close-quarters, physical combat system built on elaborate combos that blend bare-handed strikes, grapples, kicks and bladed weapons, with the ability to chain timed counters, aerial dashes and full-on wrestling moves against larger foes. Weapons can be enhanced with elemental effects such as fire and ice, adding a layer of tactical depth that encourages players to vary their approach depending on the type of enemy faced.

The game world is vast and vertical, explorable thanks to a flight ability and a Spider-Man-style grappling hook that let players clear elevation changes and reach otherwise unreachable spots, making free exploration as central to the experience as combat itself. Around these mechanics revolves a mature-toned narrative set on a fictional continent scarred by factional conflict, in which players alternate between main missions, settlement management and large-scale battles involving entire armies. That said, the game has some notable shortcomings: an environmental interaction system several reviewers found overly fiddly, a protagonist perceived as less charismatic than the rich world surrounding him, and difficulty spikes that are not always finely calibrated, leaving the pacing somewhat uneven.

It nonetheless remains a title that stands out for its technical ambition and for art direction that renders a dense, believable world. Helped along by the years-long anticipation that preceded its release, Crimson Desert has been among the most talked-about launches of recent months, repeatedly returning to the center of conversation among action open-world fans.
